Temporary Classroom Assistant

Position Title:                    Classroom Assistant       

Pay Rate:                             $19.46 to $22.96 Hourly (Temporary until March 25, 2026)            

Reports To:                         Center Manager                              

 

Position Summary: 

The Classroom Assistant works in collaboration with the Team Leader and Family Services Teacher (FST) to ensure the preschool classroom provides an educational environment that is developmentally and linguistically appropriate and accommodates children’s individual rates of development as well as individual interests, temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. This role also ensures the classroom is safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive. In addition to classroom support, the Classroom Assistant serves as a Transportation Assistant, helping ensure the safe transportation of children to and from the center by assisting with boarding, supervision, and safety procedures during transit. The CA will work with the Team Leader and FST to ensure that the team works in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards/USDA requirements, state licensing requirements, and agency policies and procedures. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. HS/GED Required.
3. Valid Washington State Driver’s License & Auto insurance
4. Washington State ECE Initial Certificate or Preschool Child Development Associate Certificate (CDA). * Candidates who do not meet the minimum education requirement must meet this requirement within two (2) years of hire date and will be placed on a Professional Development Plan.
5. One year of classroom work experience with preschool children.
6. Demonstrated ability to work closely with other team members, ability to grasp a team-centered approach to delivery of services for children and families.

Preferred Qualifications:

• AA in Early Childhood Education

Essential Job Functions:

1. Assist the Team Leader and the Family Services Teacher in the following duties in accordance with Head Start /USDA requirements:

1. Assist in implementing classroom activities and preparation of materials and supplies.
2. Assist in administering developmental assessments and health screenings for all children.
3. Implement, support, and promote policies and procedures for Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Guidance and Active Supervision.
4. Conduct child observations and input data as assigned. 
5. Document all contacts directly received from parents. Assist with written and electronic documentation of the provision of education and special services as assigned.
6. Assist with the scheduling of parent-teacher conferences and home visits and participate in the conferences/visits as assigned.
7. Provide assistance to classroom volunteers and parents to help them feel comfortable and successful in the classroom by providing guidance and direction to them during the classroom session.
8. Use practices that value cultural backgrounds, special needs, and developmentally appropriate practices.
9. Assist with safe transportation of children by serving as a Transportation Assistant when needed, ensuring children are properly secured, following safety procedures, and maintaining a calm, supportive environment during transit.
10. Support child supervision during transport by engaging with children in positive interactions, monitoring behavior, and ensuring accurate headcounts during pick-up and drop-off to and from the center.
11. Communicate transportation-related concerns to transportation staff and management, including incidents, delays, or safety issues, and assist families during arrival and departure to promote smooth and secure transitions.
12. Maintain a safe, healthy and sanitary environment ensuring that children are supervised at all times; respond quickly to crisis or emergency situations that may occur; provide first aid, CPR, and access emergency services as needed.
13. Be committed to characterizing a culture of safety within our centers, playgrounds, buses and anywhere that children may be present. Be familiar with and encourage EPICs culture of “Speak Up, Speak Out”.
14. Proactively generate and document in-kind contributions.
15. Actively participate in professional development/coaching to improve student learning and performance.
16. Actively participate in center family nights, parent meetings, staff meetings, professional development opportunities and all relevant center activities.

 Conditions of Employment:

1. Prior to employment, complete a pre-employment drug screen, Tb skin test by an EPIC approved healthcare provider at no cost to the employee.
2. Pre-employment basic physical by an EPIC healthcare provider (obtain within (30) days of employment and no cost to the employee).
3. Must pass an initial and periodic background check through the Washington State Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF).
4. Provide proof of MMR vaccination and/ or resistance to Measles, Mumps & Rubella.
5. Current Food Handlers card (obtain the training within 30 days of employment).
6. Current First Aid/CPR card (obtain within thirty 30 days of employment).
7. Complete Childcare Basics 30 hours STARS training within 3 months of hire
8. Meet the minimum education requirements within the timeframe as stated in the performance standards.
9. Complete Child Abuse and Neglect training and all other mandated training.
10. CEO Approval.
